Textured ceilings have fallen out of favor as the move towards a cleaner, more modern aesthetic has come into vogue. Many houses that were built through the 1990’s and even into the early 2000’s contain textured ceilings. If you have been contemplating removing dated textured ceilings, here are some factors to consider:
- Consider the condition of the texture. Texture that has already been painted over can be extremely difficult to remove, as the paint acts as a seal it the texture becomes very difficult to remove.
- The biggest concern many homeowners have is the amount of dust, dirt and disruption to their homes and lives. And it is true, removing textured ceiling can be a messy job. However, the proper area preparation can alleviate most of the issue. We like to seal off the entire area to be completed, and cover all vents and flooring to ensure dust does not get into house systems.
- After removing the texture, one wildcard is the condition of the drywall underneath. Typically skim coating the rough spots will produce a paint-ready finish, but occasionally more extensive repairs will be needed.
- Smaller jobs, such as a single ceiling, can typically be completely removed, skim coated, sanded, and painted in a day. Larger jobs, such as multiple rooms or even an entire house, can take several days to a week to complete. This is a great project to schedule over the family vacation. What is better than coming home to a brand new look, and not a single trace of material anywhere!
